Better Than Beating Rome

The disciples likely hoped this was another one of Jesus’ parables or cryptic teachings. How could He die, He is supposed to rule and reign over Jerusalem? It would seem impossible for Him to actually rise from the dead and unnecessary for their hopes of Him freeing Jerusalem from Roman rule.

Nevertheless, He had to tell them. Even though they wouldn’t understand, they needed to know. Even if their preconceived notions of Him blocked them from understanding. He knew after his death and resurrection, this prophecy would pave the way for their belief in Him as the Son of God. How could they not believe in His deity when He predicts His own death and resurrection. This also shows that Jesus was not murdered, He did not have His life taken from Him, but he laid it down freely.

To share this news with them undisturbed, Jesus intentionally tries to pass through Galilee without anyone knowing. Jesus prioritized His disciples hearing this message clearly over the crowds of potential people that would undoubtedly swarm Him for teachings and miracles.

Jesus wants to prepare His disciples for what is coming. He does not want His disciples to be taken off-guard by His crucifixion. Instead, Jesus wants them to view it with faith, trusting in His promise that He will rise again.

He wants them to see and know Him for who He actually is, so far beyond their narrow hopes and dreams. They desired Him to defeat Rome. He had even bigger things in store.

As we anticipate His promised return, let us not lose heart when it feels like it is a long way off. He rose from the dead. We can trust Him to come back again.
