Mark 1:35-39 · BSB
35Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up and went out to a solitary place to pray. 36Simon and his companions went to look for Him, 37and when they found Him, they said, “Everyone is looking for You!” 38But Jesus answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns so I can preach there as well, for that is why I have come.” 39So He went throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
Jesus
For most people, it takes a lot to wake up before the sun comes up—usually something really important. We see that Jesus considered spending time with the Father of greater value than sleeping in. Jesus constantly walks in submission and in step with His Heavenly Father, constantly seeking out His will.
There is something so special about waking up early and being with Christ. Many followers of Jesus have made this a daily habit. Part of being a disciple of Jesus is wanting to be like Him. So when we see Him waking up early to meet with the Father, we should desire to follow His example. This is not a way to earn good favor with God—Christ already has given us that! We do it for the joy of being dependent on Him for all things and simply being with Him.
His Desires
Jesus desires to accomplish the Father's will. He is on a mission and was given instructions from the Lord, which He follows perfectly. We also see Jesus' and the Father's desire for more than a single city. He desires that the world will know God through Him.
Follow Through
- Worship and praise Jesus for being in submission to His Father's will!
- Carve away some special time to be with the Father, maybe even before the sun comes up.
- In that time, take a moment to read scripture and listen to Him and for His will and direction in your life.
- Spread news about Jesus to others, even in other cities.
