Mark 3:7-12 · BSB

⁷So Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the sea, accompanied by a large crowd from Galilee, Judea, ⁸Jerusalem, Idumea, the region beyond the Jordan, and the vicinity of Tyre and Sidon. The large crowd came to Him when they heard what great things He was doing. ⁹Jesus asked His disciples to have a boat ready for Him so that the crowd would not crush Him. ¹⁰For He had healed so many that all who had diseases were pressing forward to touch Him. ¹¹And when the unclean spirits saw Him, they fell down before Him and cried out, “You are the Son of God!” ¹²But He warned them sternly not to make Him known.

Jesus

There is a level of popularity when people know your name on the streets. There is a whole other level when the crowds are pressing in on you so much you need to get into a boat so you don’t get pummeled. Word was getting out that Jesus heals and sets the oppressed free, so He had to get creative when He preached.

The message of Jesus holds a value that healing does not. The words that He speaks are eternal (Matthew 24:35). Physical healing only lasts till someone dies and becomes unnecessary when we have new resurrected bodies in Jesus (Philippians 3:20-21). This is why Jesus makes room to teach and share the good news. By getting on a boat, He was saying this message is even better than healing.

Why did Jesus again tell the demons not to speak out that He is the Son of God? Jesus is aware of what is going on around Him and He might be keeping news from spreading too fast. Even though Jesus came to lay down His life freely (John 10:18), He had things to accomplish before that time. This might explain why He’s withdrawing from the Pharisees when they began plotting to kill Him (verse 6). This also explains why He is commanding the demons to not make His deity known. Jesus is calculated and aware of His timing and His task at hand. He knows the time needed to do His ministry before the ministry of the cross.

His Desires

Jesus obviously desires to heal people. Yet it seems that He needed to be more than a healer; He was called to be a teacher and to proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God. This good news was accompanied by healing, but He desired more than just healing—so much that He got on a boat so that he’d be able to teach the crowds.

Follow Through

Cling to His teachings.
Draw near to Jesus and don’t just run after Him for temporary things.
Look to Him for healing and deliverance.
