After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, rolled away the stone, and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards trembled in fear of him and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said! Come, see the place where He lay. Then go quickly and tell His disciples,

¹³Then Jesus went up on the mountain and called for those He wanted, and they came to Him. ¹⁴He appointed twelve of them, whom He designated as apostles, to accompany Him, to be sent out to preach, ¹⁵and to have authority to drive out demons. ¹⁶These are the twelve He appointed: Simon (whom He named Peter), ¹⁷James son of Zebedee and his brother John (whom He named Boanerges, meaning “Sons of Thunder”), ¹⁸Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, ¹⁹and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus.

Jesus

Why does Jesus take His disciples up on a mountain to commission them? I don’t think the hike was a way to weed out the slow-pokes. It wasn’t a race to the top, either. Rather, it served as a place of significance. Throughout the Bible, mountains set the stage for important events and the commissioning of the twelve was no exception. Jesus delegates and gives His disciples authority over the spiritual world, specifically to drive out demons.

His Desires

Jesus could do it all by Himself, but He desires to raise up His disciples to do the very work He has been doing. He’s been preaching and He calls them to preach. He’s been casting out demons and He calls them to the same. He longs for us to partake in His work. He takes joy in His power flowing through us, transforming our own lives and the lives of others.

Just like Jesus called the twelve, He wants to call you as well. Good inventors make things that fulfill a purpose, fix problems, and improve the world. The greatest inventor of all is the Creator of the universe, and everything He has made fulfills a purpose. So, who better to look to for your purpose than the One who created you. This is why Jesus desires to call you into your purpose––to walk in the fullness of His plans for you. As we continually look to Him for direction, purpose, and calling, we are walking as His disciples.

Follow Through

Preach the good news.
Walk in His authority.
Raise up others who can walk in the calling and power of Jesus.
Look to Jesus for your calling a purpose.
